Master Class: Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA)

On Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December 2009, Namahn runs the third edition of its EIA (Enterprise Information Architecture) master class. During two days, you can gain insight into Namahn’s EIA methods and techniques, which grew from conducting a variety of EIA projects over the past years. You will learn more about enterprise 2.0 and the information-processing maturity of your organisation, about taxonomies and ontologies, about the information life cycle and the knowledge-management house.

This master class may be right for you if:

• You are in charge of organising information and want to learn how to conduct Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA) projects
• You are concerned that valuable information remains locked in departmental silos
• You want to create a taxonomy for your intranet, but don’t know how to proceed and reach consensus
• You need to migrate large bodies of content
• You are enthusiastic about web 2.0 and wonder how to introduce wikis, blogs and other collaborative tools in an enterprise context

Led by Koen Peters and featuring contributions from Marc Van de Woestijne, Mieke Daniels, Olivier Renard and Michel Vuijlsteke, this highly practical master class challenges the knowledge of a small group of participants (maximum 8), teaches them how to manage information at an enterprise level, and introduces them to enterprise 2.0.

Participants in the previous master class gave the class an overall score of 80%.

The program for the EIA master class runs as follows:

On day 1, we present an EIA framework with the following layers:

• Classification of information
  Taxonomies, faceted classification, metadata, search etc.
• Governance
  The organisational structure required for EIA, the business drivers, the assessment of your organisation’s maturity in information processing (IPMM) and enterprise 2.0
• The information life cycle
  A five-step decision model: create, review, approve, keep and share
• Technology
  Where information is located and which technology layers are used to support the information life cycle (technology stack)

On day 2,we focus on practical EIA methods and techniques employed at Namahn, such as:

• Field studies in the context of EIA (stakeholder interviews, among others)
• Content analysis (content inventory/audit)
• Information Process Maturity Model (IPMM) assessments
• Collaborative mind-mapping workshops and card-sorting for classification
• Navigation schemes and mock-up
• Migration path
• Content workflow
• EIA roadmap
• Usability testing

Participating in the master class helps you:

• Understand the field of EIA and its main concepts
• Know how and when to apply these EIA concepts
• Put together a toolbox for practicing EIA
• Be able to recognise the when an EIA is good or bad, through examples and exercises

Each participant receives a copy of Peter Morville and Louis Rosenfeld’s Information Architecture for the World Wide Web (3rd edition).

Note that this is NOT a course on "Enterprise Architecture" (EA), which is about harmonizing business processes and IT infrastructure. We will not be dealing with typical EA-topics such as data models, application software, operating systems and programming languages. We will talk about technology, but always from the information manager’s perspective.

Timing
The master class takes place on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December 2009. We start at 9.00 AM and end at 5.00 PM.

Language
The master class is conducted in English.

Registration
The participation fee is 1.400 euro (excluding VAT). Each additional participant from the same company qualifies for a 10% rebate on the fee. Please register by sending mail to masterclassEIA@namahn.com.

Target audience
We accept participants with a basic understanding of information management, typically information managers, information architects, knowledge managers, project managers, technical writers and product managers.
