Flemish government (Education and Training)
Designing and developing a platform to showcase the official education offering for adults.

Lifelong learning? It is never too late for a career switch, an extra diploma or a new hobby. The Flemish Government, Education and Training, wanted to bring together all education offering for adults in one catalogue, named the “Opleidingskompas” (Training Compass). The website also had to guide visitors through the offering and answer common questions about education for adults.

Namahn was subcontracted by the DXC consortium as a design partner in this project. Timing was a big challenge: DXC analysts and developers were ready to do their work and waiting for the design of the website, when Namahn was onboarded in the project.
Approach
We started with four co-creation workshops to get all stakeholders on the same page and to gather direct input from stakeholders in the field (the training centres offering courses for adults).

We then developed a full concept for the website, allowing analysts and developers to start elaborating the page types. In short sprints of two weeks, we completed the detailed design, including the visual design, according to the design guidelines by ‘Digitaal Vlaanderen’.

We tested the website with future end-users, first using a prototype in Figma and then later on, briefly before the launch, using a developed beta version. We also contributed to the change and communication track of the project, by regularly presenting the design to a broader group of stakeholders and explaining the underlying decisions to the training centres. After the launch on June 5 2023, barely four months after the start of the whole project, Namahn remained involved in the further improvement of the Training Compass, refining features and adding new functionalities.

“Cooperation with the people at Namahn went very

smoothly. Their accessibility, professionalism and sense of the stakeholders
contributed greatly to the success of this project.”
Result
The website (www.opleidingskompas.be) offers a user-friendly, well-structured and content-rich platform, guiding citizens through the wide offering of recognised courses and programmes and allowing the training centres to showcase their training offering. Because of the co-creative process, the end-result got full support from stakeholders in the field. After its successful launch, the website immediately became a main pillar of the government’s ambitious programme to support life-long learning in Flanders.
